Spencer grew up in Sydney, along with her older brother. Coming from a musical household with her father being a singer and the host of the children’s show “Play School”, she was taught to play piano at the age of four and started acting and writing songs by her teens. She also took singing, acting and dance classes. While attending high school, she was a member of several bands, such as Baby Loves to Cha Cha.
After getting some stage experience by occasionally accompanying her father on his stage performances, Spencer appeared in a production of “Mission Thraxonia” and later in a production of “Rasputin”. In the late ’80s she started to land roles on Australian television, primarily as an actress in television series such as “The Flying Doctor”. In 1990 she landed roles in two Australian films, “What the Moon Saw” and “The Crossing”, and went on to appear in several TV series, including “Hampton Court”, “Mission Top Secret”, “Home and Away”, “All Saints” and “Beastmaster”. Paving her way to fame and recognition, Spencer’s net worth started to rise.
However, by the end of the ’90s, she turned her artistic focus on to her singing career, and in 2001 released the album entitled “White Monkey”, under EMI Records. She accompanied her then husband Crowe on a US tour with his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Her second album, “Calling All Magicians”, came out in 2010. She has also released several singles, among them the songs “Blast Off” and “Forgive Me”. A few videos have also been produced, under the direction of her ex-husband. Although none of her singles made it to the charts, they got quite positive reviews. In the years since, she has held a number of live concerts and has performed with various artists. Spencer’s music career has also contributed to her popularity and to her wealth as well.
In 2012, she became a contestant in the 12th season of the popular Australian television reality show “Dancing with the Stars”, and with her partner Damian Whitewood, finished in second place.
However, despite her rising career in showbizz, Spencer has been best known for her marriage with the acclaimed actor Russell Crowe, whom she met while filming “The Crossing”, in which Crowe starred. Following the film’s release in 1990, the couple began dating, and got engaged in 2002, with Crowe proposing to her with a $100,000 worth diamond ring. They married the following year at Crowe’s cattle ranch in New South Wales. However, in 2012 the couple separated.
Speaking further about Spencer’s private life, she has two children with Crowe. Sources believe she is single at present.
Spencer is involved in philanthropy. She has been an active supporter of The Australian Children’s Music Foundation, an educational program focused on helping underprivileged and indigenous children in Australia. She has also been involved in women’s cancer programs such as for breast cancer.
