Hartwell was selected in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. From 2001 until 2004, he was a member of the Ravens. He never missed a game, despite being restricted to special teams in 2001. He concluded his Ravens career with 337 tackles, six sacks, and one interception.

Hartwell became a free agent after the 2004 season and was signed to a six-year, $26.25 million contract by the Atlanta Falcons. He was released by the Falcons on March 2, 2007, after two injury-plagued seasons. He appeared in only 13 games and has 63 tackles and one sack.
